Traditional SEO helps a page compete in search results. AEO focuses on the generated answer itself: whether the brand is recognized, whether its facts are accurate, whether it appears in a relevant shortlist, and whether the answer can support its claims with credible sources.

AEO does not replace SEO. It adds a new measurement and content problem: being a useful answer source when the user may receive a summary instead of visiting a list of links.

Quick answer

A practical AEO program has five parts:

  1. Map the questions buyers ask and the decisions behind them.
  2. Test how answer engines currently respond.
  3. Strengthen the official pages that should own each answer.
  4. Build public evidence that can corroborate important claims.
  5. Retest the same questions and separate real change from collection noise.

The goal is not to “write for a model.” The goal is to make the brand easier for both people and machines to identify, verify, and use in a decision.

UnderAI turns this principle into an operating system: UnderAI GEO Workspace measures Prompt-, platform-, competitor-, answer-, Sentiment-, and Citation-level results; AEO Content Strategy defines the answer assets; Website AI SEO makes them accessible and understandable; and Citation Strategy builds the public evidence needed to support important claims.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO vs AI SEO

These terms overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

DisciplinePrimary questionMain assetMain measurement
SEOCan this page earn visibility and clicks in search results?Crawlable, relevant, authoritative web pagesRankings, impressions, clicks, organic traffic
AEOCan an answer engine use this brand or page in a useful response?Clear answers, entity facts, comparison assets, public evidenceMentions, recommendation position, description accuracy, citations
GEOHow can a brand improve its presence across generative engines?Content, entities, sources, and model-facing evidenceGenerative answer presence and source adoption
AI SEOCan AI search systems understand the site, entity, and content structure?Technical access, schema, hierarchy, summaries, answer-ready pagesCrawlability, interpretation, answer inclusion, citations

In practice, a strong program uses all four where they fit. SEO builds discoverable web assets. AI SEO makes those assets easier to interpret. AEO organizes them around answer tasks. GEO is a broader market term for visibility across generative systems.

Why AEO matters

People increasingly ask systems to compare options, explain risks, summarize a category, or recommend a provider. In those moments, the business competes inside an answer, not only on a results page.

A brand can lose that decision in several ways:

  • it is absent from the answer;
  • it is mentioned but described incorrectly;
  • it appears after competitors without a clear reason to choose it;
  • a competitor’s official page is cited while the brand’s page is not;
  • third-party sources define the category without including the brand.

AEO turns these outcomes into observable problems with page owners, evidence gaps, and retestable actions.

How answer engines use web evidence

No public checklist can guarantee how every model will answer every question. A useful content strategy therefore focuses on conditions that can be inspected:

Clear entities

The site should state who the company is, what category it belongs to, what it offers, who it serves, and which claims are supported by evidence. Names, descriptions, URLs, and structured data should not contradict one another.

Extractable answers

Important pages should answer one decision clearly. Definitions, comparison criteria, steps, formulas, limitations, and FAQs should be expressed in stable HTML, not hidden in vague marketing copy or images.

Corroborated claims

The official site is necessary, but it is not always sufficient. Reviews, partner pages, independent research, media, directories, documentation, and expert sources can help establish whether a claim is credible.

Task fit

A definition page, a tool comparison, a methodology guide, and a service page solve different jobs. One page should not try to own all of them. AEO works better when the site has a clear owner for each decision.

The AEO workflow

1. Build a market-grounded question library

Start with real search queries, customer questions, sales objections, category language, competitor comparisons, and observed AI prompts. Do not turn every keyword into a prompt. Group near-duplicates by the object, the user task, and the question angle.

2. Freeze a monitoring panel

Separate a broad research library from a smaller fixed panel. The fixed panel should preserve exact wording, platform, country, language, repetition, and success rules so changes can be measured over time.

3. Capture complete responses and sources

Save the full answer, status, timestamp, brand mentions, competitor mentions, cited URLs, and the original path. A failed collection is not zero visibility. A successful answer with no citation is a different fact.

4. Assign an official page owner

For each important question, decide which official page should provide the canonical answer. Diagnose whether the owner is missing, thin, duplicated, hard to crawl, or unsupported by public evidence.

5. Improve the answer asset

Strengthen the page with a direct answer, a useful structure, verifiable facts, limitations, internal links, and appropriate schema. Add third-party evidence where the decision requires independent trust.

6. Retest and learn

Run the same panel after publication. Compare successful response units, not incompatible aggregates. Record whether the brand appeared, how it was described, which sources were used, and what else changed during the test window.

What content supports AEO?

The strongest asset is the one that fully answers a real decision. Common examples include:

  • category definition pages;
  • product and service comparison guides;
  • methodology and measurement pages;
  • implementation guides;
  • customer cases with clear conditions and outcomes;
  • official fact pages and FAQs;
  • original research and data;
  • third-party reviews, profiles, and expert coverage.

Publishing more pages is not automatically better. A small set of complete owner pages is more useful than dozens of near-duplicate articles.

How to measure AEO

Use metrics that match the question being tested:

  • Response success rate: Did the collection return an evaluable answer?
  • Strict mention rate: Was the exact brand present in successful answers?
  • Recommendation position: Was the brand a first choice, conditional choice, peer, or not recommended?
  • Description accuracy: Were the evaluated brand facts correct?
  • Official citation rate: Did successful answers cite the official domain?
  • External source adoption: Which third-party pages and domains supplied evidence?
  • Answer stability: Did repeated runs produce a consistent result?

Do not combine AI referral traffic with citations or mentions. They describe different parts of the journey.

What AEO cannot guarantee

No responsible provider can guarantee a specific mention, ranking, or citation. Answers vary by platform, model, location, time, prompt wording, and available sources. A cited page also does not prove that one heading or schema block caused the citation.

AEO should be treated as evidence-led optimization: improve the public information system, measure the same questions, and make decisions from reproducible changes rather than promises.

How UnderAI delivers AEO

UnderAI packages AEO into connected products rather than a one-time content rewrite:

What our AEO answer sample revealed

UnderAI’s July 2026 baseline contained five AEO questions covering definition, AEO versus SEO, techniques, products, and providers. Across the successful platform runs, the AEO group produced 44 evaluable answers, 335 structured Citation facts, and a 72.7% response-level Citation rate.

The sources were not limited to definitions. AI answers also used vendor product pages, comparison guides, agency pages, community discussions, and implementation articles. This is why an AEO program needs more than one keyword-stuffed explainer. It needs an evidence system in which each page owns a different user decision.

Example: turn one broad topic into distinct answer assets

For the topic “answer engine optimization,” a useful site architecture can assign:

  • the definition and operating model to a What Is AEO page;
  • product-selection questions to an AEO Tools comparison;
  • implementation questions to an AI Search Optimization guide;
  • measurement questions to an AI Search Monitoring method;
  • commercial evaluation to an AEO Services page.

Those pages can share terminology without repeating the same answer. Each earns its URL by solving a different task and linking to the next decision.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO focuses on visibility and traffic from search results. AEO focuses on how a brand or source appears inside generated answers. They share technical, content, and authority foundations, so they should work together.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO is centered on becoming a useful answer source; GEO is a broader term for optimization across generative engines. The practical work often shares the same entities, pages, sources, and monitoring.

How long does AEO take?

There is no universal timeline. Technical fixes may be visible quickly, while source adoption and stable answer changes can take longer. Measure progress with a frozen baseline and report uncertainty rather than promising a date.

Can schema guarantee an AI citation?

No. Structured data can clarify a page and its entity, but it does not guarantee that an answer engine will use or cite the page.

What is the first AEO deliverable?

Start with a baseline: a reviewed prompt library, a smaller fixed panel, complete responses, citation URLs, and a map from each high-value question to an official page owner.
