The analysis must start with response-level Citation URLs. A domain leaderboard alone cannot tell you which question the source answered or what action to take.

Two source gaps require different work

Official source gap

A competitor’s official page is cited for a question where your official site is absent. Investigate:

  • whether your site has a page owner for the task;
  • whether the owner answers the question directly;
  • which facts, proof, comparisons, and limitations the cited competitor page contains;
  • whether your page is technically accessible and canonical;
  • whether the page’s entity and product claims are consistent elsewhere.

The likely action is to create, consolidate, or strengthen an official page.

External source gap

An independent publisher, community, expert, partner, or review page supplies the answer evidence. Investigate:

  • the exact page and content form;
  • the author or stable account identity;
  • the facts and entities included;
  • whether the source is editorial, contributed, paid, community-led, or inaccessible;
  • whether your brand can add credible evidence without compromising the source.

The likely action is research, expert contribution, PR, review, partnership, or a decision that the source is not currently reachable.

Build the source-gap table

Use one row per response-to-URL fact:

FieldPurpose
Prompt ID and business taskExplains the question the source answered
Platform, market, dateDefines the observation context
Response statusProtects against missing-data errors
Cited canonical URLIdentifies the actual page
Domain and publisher typeSupports grouping without losing page detail
Brand roleShows whether the source supports you, a competitor, or the category
Official/external classificationRoutes the action correctly
Page owner or source ownerAssigns responsibility
Proposed action and gateMakes the gap executable
Retest prompt setDefines how change will be checked

Keep the same URL in different responses as separate source-adoption facts. Deduplicate only repeated instances of the same URL inside one response.

How to prioritize source gaps

Score gaps using evidence that changes the decision:

  1. Demand: How important and frequent is the underlying question?
  2. Repetition: Is the source adopted across several prompts, platforms, or dates?
  3. Competitive impact: Does the source support a competitor recommendation?
  4. Business relevance: Does the answer influence discovery, selection, trust, or conversion?
  5. Feasibility: Can the official page be improved or the external source be approached credibly?
  6. Testability: Can the same prompt set be retested after the action?

Do not prioritize a source only because its domain is large. A smaller page that repeatedly answers the exact buyer question can be more actionable.

Common source-gap mistakes

  • treating a failed collection as a no-citation response;
  • keeping only domains and discarding exact URLs;
  • assuming an official website citation and a brand mention are the same fact;
  • calling a domain “purchasable” without verifying page form and author or account identity;
  • copying competitor content instead of understanding the decision modules it supplies;
  • promising citation causality after a single edit or run;
  • publishing a universal “top sources” list from a narrow sample.

Source-gap analysis in UnderAI

UnderAI GEO Workspace preserves Answer Snapshots and their Citation records, while Prompt Detail can surface top cited platforms and articles. UnderAI’s Citation Strategy enriches those response-level facts, separates official and external gaps, assigns owners, and defines the next action and retest.

The resulting plan may send an official gap to Website AI SEO or AEO Content Strategy, and an external gap to source research and contribution work. Measurement remains tied to the same Prompt IDs.

Source gaps observed in UnderAI’s own baseline

UnderAI’s July 2026 study found that external publishers, competitor-owned pages, and community sources played different evidence roles. The full distribution and denominator live in the Most Cited Domains study; this page focuses on how to convert the leading source relationships into URL-level actions.

The leading source gaps were not abstract domains:

SourceCitation factsResponsesPromptsWhat to inspect
semrush.com604614Which official pages answer definitions, product selection, and methods
tryprofound.com50267Which pages establish category language and enterprise positioning
reddit.com48277Which discussions or recommendations satisfy independent proof needs
blog.hubspot.com25196Which educational structures are repeatedly used as evidence

This is why a source-gap action starts at URL level. “Get coverage on Reddit” is not a plan. The analyst must identify the exact thread or page, the question it supports, the evidence it contributes, and whether a credible participation route exists.

From evidence to action

For each high-priority gap, write one action record:

  1. target Prompt and answer role;
  2. exact cited competitor or publisher URL;
  3. missing evidence on UnderAI’s official page;
  4. external corroboration that would be useful and truthful;
  5. owner, publication gate, and retest condition.

The complete domain results and counting rules are reported in Most Cited Domains in AI Search. Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use query fan-out to find supporting pages across subtopics and sources; see AI features and your website. That makes exact page evidence more useful than a generic domain list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a citation gap and a content gap?

A content gap is missing or incomplete information. A citation gap is observed source adoption in an AI answer. One can reveal the other, but they are not interchangeable.

Can I close a source gap by linking to the cited publisher?

Not necessarily. Your outbound link does not guarantee that an answer system will adopt either source. Improve the underlying evidence and test the outcome.

Should I copy the headings of a cited competitor page?

No. Analyze which information jobs the page completes, then produce an original owner grounded in your product, expertise, facts, and audience.

How many observations make a source gap real?

There is no universal number. Report prompt, platform, date, and repetition coverage so the reader can judge stability. Higher-impact decisions need stronger repeated evidence.
