You cannot guarantee that an answer engine will cite a page. You can improve the quality, relevance, and availability of evidence that credible sources publish about your brand and category.

Start from observed source demand

Collect the exact Citation URLs used for your target prompts. For each source, record:

  • prompt and response;
  • cited page and canonical URL;
  • domain, page type, author, or stable account;
  • entities and claims present;
  • platform, market, and date;
  • repetition across prompts or platforms.

Do not start with a generic media list. A domain is not an exact opportunity unless the relevant channel or page form and a credible access path are verified.

Identify the evidence the source supplies

External pages often provide one of these functions:

  • independent product comparison;
  • category definition or terminology;
  • expert judgment;
  • original data or benchmark;
  • review or customer experience;
  • implementation method;
  • community validation;
  • risk, limitation, or controversy evidence.

Your contribution must fit the source’s actual information job.

Create something worth citing

Useful contributions include:

  • a transparent original dataset;
  • verifiable product documentation;
  • a named expert viewpoint;
  • a scoped case study with method and limitations;
  • a correction supported by primary evidence;
  • a tool, template, or reference that solves the page’s task.

Thin guest posts, undisclosed paid praise, and repeated brand claims create weak evidence and reputational risk.

Verify the publication route

Label each target:

  • confirmed editorial pitch route;
  • confirmed contributor or partner route;
  • purchasable placement with disclosure requirements;
  • community participation route;
  • relationship required;
  • not observed or not found.

“Not found” is not the same as “impossible.” It is the current evidence state.

Retest source adoption

After publication, preserve the live URL and version, then rerun the same prompt set. Measure whether the page is available, whether the brand appears, and whether the source is cited. Do not claim that the publication caused a citation after one answer.

UnderAI Citation Strategy

UnderAI GEO Workspace preserves Answer Snapshots and Citation records. UnderAI’s Citation Strategy turns those records into an external-source map, verifies page and author identity, evaluates publication routes, develops evidence briefs, and defines the retest.

What external Citation demand looked like in our baseline

External websites plus community and social pages supplied 85.3% of observed Citation facts in UnderAI’s July 2026 baseline. The Most Cited Domains study owns the complete counts and source-type denominator.

The result does not mean a brand should buy generic media placements. It means generated answers frequently relied on evidence outside vendor domains.

Match the asset to the evidence gap

Missing evidence in the answerUseful external assetWeak substitute

The publication route must be credible for the exact page form and audience. A domain’s presence in the source table does not prove that any placement on that domain will be adopted.

Research source

See Most Cited Domains in AI Search for the top observed domains, publisher mix, and exclusions. The study reports source adoption, not a list of websites available for purchase. Platform source behavior is documented separately by Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

External source acceptance gate

Before commissioning an asset, record the target question, exact observed source page, publisher form, evidence gap, credible contributor, disclosure requirements, and publication route. After publication, preserve the live URL and the approved fact version.

Retest the unchanged Prompt Panel and classify the outcome as:

  • page published but not observed;
  • page discovered but not cited;
  • page cited once;
  • page cited repeatedly across runs or prompts;
  • brand mentioned without the page;
  • collection unavailable.

Only the last four states require answer evidence. Publication volume, domain authority, or a commercial placement receipt cannot substitute for observed source adoption.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in cited media?

Some channels offer paid formats, but availability, disclosure, editorial control, and source credibility vary. Verify the exact route and never treat payment as a citation guarantee.

Are backlinks the goal?

No. A link can be useful, but the source must first supply credible evidence for the target question.

How many external sources do I need?

There is no universal count. Prioritize repeated, decision-relevant source gaps and diversify where concentration creates risk.
