That requires three things: relevant public evidence, authoritative corroboration, and repeatable measurement.

Start with the questions you need to win

Do not begin with hundreds of generated prompts. Begin with decisions customers actually make:

  • What is this category?
  • Which products fit a specific use case?
  • How do two approaches compare?
  • What does implementation require?
  • Which provider can deliver the work?
  • What risks, prices, proof, or limitations affect the choice?

Record where each prompt came from. Search demand, sales conversations, support tickets, and observed AI questions are market evidence. Model-generated variations are candidates until reviewed.

Establish a ChatGPT baseline

For every response unit, preserve:

  • the exact prompt;
  • collection date, market, language, and product route;
  • whether a usable answer was returned;
  • brand and competitor mentions;
  • recommendation position;
  • Sentiment;
  • Citation URLs where available;
  • the full answer text.

A failed collection must not become “the brand ranked nowhere.” It is missing measurement.

Improve the official page owner

Assign each important question to one primary page. That page should:

  1. answer the question in the opening section;
  2. identify the entity, audience, and use case precisely;
  3. include verifiable facts and decision criteria;
  4. explain limitations and tradeoffs;
  5. use descriptive headings, tables, and FAQs only when they help the decision;
  6. link to deeper proof, product, service, or method pages;
  7. remain accessible at a stable canonical URL.

Avoid asking one page to rank for a definition, a software comparison, a service query, and every platform-specific monitoring question. The page job should match the search and answer task.

Build evidence beyond your website

ChatGPT may rely on publishers, communities, documentation, reviews, research, and other external sources. Analyze the exact pages used for your target prompts:

  • What claims do they support?
  • Which entities and alternatives do they include?
  • Is the source current and attributable?
  • Can your business contribute a fact, dataset, expert view, case, or correction?
  • Is the channel actually accessible to you?

The objective is credible corroboration, not mass mentions on low-quality sites.

Make your entity consistent

Use consistent names, aliases, descriptions, product relationships, leadership, locations, and claims across official pages and authoritative profiles. Resolve contradictions before adding more schema. Structured data can express a fact; it cannot decide which conflicting claim is true.

Measure the right outcomes

Use answer-level metrics:

OutcomeWhat it shows
Mention RateWhether the brand appears in evaluable answers
VisibilityHow prominently the brand appears under a defined formula
TOP3Whether the brand is among the first three relevant recommendations
SentimentPositive, Neutral, or Negative characterization
Citation evidenceWhich pages support the answer
Competitor gapWhich alternatives appear where the brand does not

Referral traffic and conversions remain important downstream outcomes, but many AI-influenced decisions produce no click. Measure them alongside answer visibility, not instead of it.

Run attributable experiments

Change one meaningful owner or evidence set at a time. Save the publication version, keep the prompt panel stable, document other known changes, and repeat enough observations to avoid treating one volatile answer as a trend.

An improved result is evidence that the overall public information environment changed. Stronger causal claims require tighter controls.

Track ChatGPT visibility with UnderAI

UnderAI GEO Workspace includes ChatGPT in the current international default platform set. Tracking Projects preserve Prompt Groups, daily results, competitors, Visibility, TOP3, Sentiment, Answer Snapshots, and available Citation evidence. UnderAI’s managed products then map gaps to official pages and external sources.

What UnderAI observed in 48 ChatGPT answers

The ChatGPT route completed all 48 planned response units in UnderAI’s July 2026 category baseline. Fifteen successful answers returned at least one structured Citation, producing 153 Citation facts and 46 unique canonical source URLs. Brand and official-source outcomes are reported separately in the Citation benchmark.

The result supports a practical conclusion: crawl access is necessary, but it is not enough. ChatGPT had an active answer and source environment while other brands and publishers supplied the category evidence.

A ChatGPT improvement test

Choose one question and one page owner. Record the baseline answer, the cited pages, and the brand role. Then make one material change, such as adding a verifiable comparison table or clarifying an official product fact. Preserve the publication date and rerun the same question several times under the same collection conditions.

Success is not “the page was updated.” It is a reviewed change in one or more answer-level outcomes:

  • UnderAI becomes a correct mention;
  • the official page becomes a Citation;
  • the description becomes more accurate;
  • the brand moves into a relevant shortlist;
  • an existing source relationship becomes more reproducible.

Official crawl and measurement sources

OpenAI says publishers should allow OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets, and that ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. See the OpenAI publisher and developer FAQ and ChatGPT Search documentation. Those controls improve eligibility and measurement; they do not guarantee ranking or citation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit my website to ChatGPT to rank?

There is no single submission that guarantees inclusion or position across ChatGPT answers. Maintain accessible official pages and credible public evidence, then measure the questions that matter.

Do backlinks help ChatGPT visibility?

Authority and third-party corroboration can matter, but a backlink count alone does not explain an answer. Review the sources and claims adopted for the target prompts.

Should I create one page for every prompt?

No. Group true wording variants under one owner. Split pages when users are asking for different decisions, such as definition, comparison, audit, service, or platform monitoring.

Can UnderAI guarantee a first position?

No. UnderAI measures response-level outcomes and supports evidence-led optimization. It does not promise a fixed position in a generative system.
