The aim is not to force a model to repeat a phrase. It is to make the brand’s identity, relevance, claims, and supporting evidence clearer for the questions that matter to customers.

GEO, AEO, and SEO

The terms overlap, but each helps frame a different part of the work:

TermUseful focus
SEODiscovery and performance in conventional search results
AEOProviding direct, reliable answers to human questions
GEOHow entities and evidence are represented in generated answers

In practice, strong programs use all three. Technical SEO supports discovery. AEO improves answer completeness. GEO connects prompts, brand representation, citations, and external authority.

Read AEO vs GEO for the naming decision. This page focuses on the operating method.

How GEO works

Start with real questions

Create a Prompt Library from buyer journeys, product comparisons, support questions, category terms, and observed search or AI-answer demand. Label generated ideas separately from market-observed questions.

Establish an answer baseline

Collect successful responses under documented platform, market, language, and date conditions. Preserve the full answer, brand role, competitor position, Sentiment, and Citation URLs.

Map each question to an owner

Every important question needs a deliberate destination:

  • an official product, service, comparison, definition, or proof page;
  • an external source such as a publication, community, research page, or expert account;
  • or a decision not to publish because the demand is irrelevant or too weak.

One pillar page can own related wording variants. It should not absorb distinct tasks such as definition, software selection, implementation, audit procurement, and platform-specific monitoring when competitors already win those tasks with separate pages.

Improve official evidence

A useful owner answers the question early, establishes the entity and audience, supports claims with verifiable facts, covers decision criteria and limitations, and links to the next relevant task. Structured data can help represent page facts, but it cannot rescue incomplete or unsupported content.

Build external corroboration

AI answers often depend on third-party sources. Analyze the exact cited pages and publishers before planning outreach. Domain presence alone is not proof that a channel, author, or account is accessible.

Retest controlled changes

Freeze the published version and rerun the same prompt set. Keep collection failure separate from non-mention. A citation change is an observed outcome; it is not automatically proof that one edit caused it.

GEO metrics

Use metrics that retain their evidence trail:

  • Coverage Rate: successful, evaluable responses divided by scheduled response units;
  • Visibility: the brand’s appearance and position under a documented formula;
  • TOP3: presence among the first three relevant recommendations;
  • Sentiment: Positive, Neutral, or Negative characterization at the Answer Snapshot level;
  • Citation Rate: successful answers with at least one citation;
  • Official Citation Rate: successful answers citing the target official domain;
  • Source Gap: competitor or external sources adopted where the target source is absent.

Do not combine these metrics into a universal score unless the weights and denominator answer a real decision.

What GEO does not guarantee

GEO cannot guarantee a mention, a citation, or a recommendation. Models, retrieval systems, product interfaces, and public sources change. A responsible program reports uncertainty, unavailable data, and negative results.

It also does not replace product quality or market authority. Content cannot sustainably support a claim the business cannot substantiate.

GEO with UnderAI

UnderAI GEO Workspace tracks brands, markets, competitors, Prompt Groups, Answer Snapshots, Visibility, TOP3, Sentiment, and Citations. UnderAI’s managed Website AI SEO, AEO Content Strategy, and Citation Strategy products turn those observations into owned-page and external-source actions.

Use GEO Tools when selecting software. Use AI Search Optimization when you need an implementation workflow. Use UnderAI GEO Workspace when you need ongoing measurement.

GEO evidence from UnderAI’s baseline

The July 2026 Panel included two GEO questions covering the GEO definition and GEO tooling. Across successful runs, the GEO category produced 17 answers, five answers with structured Citations, and 50 Citation facts.

Its observed 29.4% response-level Citation rate was lower than the 72.7% rate for the AEO question group. This does not prove that AEO is more important. It shows that terminology and question task can change how platforms ground an answer, even inside closely related categories.

What that means for a GEO page

A useful GEO page should not merely replace “AEO” with “GEO.” It should explain:

  • how generative answers assemble evidence from several pages;
  • how entity clarity and external corroboration affect representation;
  • why repeated testing is needed when answers vary;
  • which work belongs to technical SEO, official content, source development, and measurement.

This page owns that explanation. The AEO vs GEO guide owns the terminology decision, while GEO Tools owns product selection.

Method note

The baseline is a small, category-specific sample and is reported as an observed result, not a universal GEO benchmark. Full denominator and platform details are available in AI Citation Rate Benchmarks. Google’s generative AI optimization guide is used for the Search indexing and page-quality boundary; it does not define or endorse a separate GEO ranking system.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO just a new name for SEO?

No. The disciplines overlap, but GEO measures and improves representation inside generated answers, including response roles and citations that conventional rank tracking does not capture.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They are closely related and often share the same implementation work. AEO emphasizes answering questions; GEO emphasizes representation in generated answers. A team can choose one public category term while retaining the useful methods of both.

Do GEO tools improve visibility automatically?

Tools measure, diagnose, and sometimes recommend actions. Improvement still depends on changes to positioning, official content, technical accessibility, external evidence, and product reality.

How quickly does GEO work?

There is no universal timeline. Publication, discovery, retrieval, model behavior, and prompt volatility all affect the observation window. Define the earliest meaningful retest before promising a date.
